Las Arenas
Cento Lúdico, Comercial y de Negocios

Client:
Aareal Bank
Consultant:
Watts
Service:
Project and Development Monitoring
Project Cost:
€120 million

The project involves the conversion of an old derelict bullring, built in 1899, into a commercial and leisure centre as well as the construction of two new office buildings adjacent to it. The existing façade is of masonry construction and is the only element of the existing building that will be maintained and restored. The expected completion date for the project is September 2008.

The first stage was to brace the existing facade and support it on a series of micro-piles. The entire interior elements were demolished, diaphragm walls constructed and excavation works commenced for the underground parking. The concrete structure is complete and the existing facade load is about to be transferred to the new sub-structure. The existing facade will be tied into the new structure via a series of walkways around the perimeter of the floor slabs.

Due to the complexity of maintaining the existing façade, Las Arenas is one of the most talked about projects currently in progress in Barcelona.
